"A Charity for our Children" Fashion Show
Tickets are now on sale for our 3rd Annual Fashion Show! It's scheduled for June 9th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the Grand Ely Lodge. This year's donations from the show will benefit the Ely Girl Scouts, Cops and Kids and the Whiteside Park Playground Project. To quote The Ely Timberjay issued on May 12, 2012: "This fun and entertaining fashion happening features 25 local models ranging in age from one-year-old to 70. Along with viewing stylish clothing, show-goers receive fashion tips." (If you didn't see our article - grab a Timberjay!)
And this year we have a special request for those of you planning on attending: Wear something you've purchased from Secret Sisters! You'll get to enter your name in for a special drawing!

As I sit on my deck this afternoon trying to decide what to write - I realize that the fact that I'm sitting on my deck on March 17, 2012 in shorts and a t-shirt is something to write about in and of itself! Not only are we having unseasonably warm temperatures, or I guess maybe because we are, but you should see the change in moods and atmosphere of the people of Ely, Minnesota!
As a town that prides itself in tourism whether it be winter or summer, we have had a crazy year of ups and downs. Between the fires of last summer and our unbelievable lack of snow this winter, maybe this is just what we the townspeople of Ely needed is an early Spring. Do we delude our thinking with ideas of no more snowfalls? No. We know there'll be the occasional stormfront or two coming through. But what are we doing in the meantime? Heck - we're out here enjoying the heatwave while we've got it! Yahooooo! is the sound heard around town right now - from the preteens out there biking, to the teenagers driving around with the windows down, to the kids playing on the new playground equipment, to the many adults taking walks or hanging out laundry...many a window has opened in these Ely homes to let all that fresh Spring air in to permeate our winter blahed furniture. (Yes that's a new word from my personal dictionary - blahed).
We are Ely and we are going to enjoy every moment of sunshine this weather has to offer! Dust off bicycles, running shoes, and skateboards. The winter blahs are gone - and we're ready for you Spring!

Did you get to the grocery store today? Are you thawing your turkey yet? Have the relatives started to arrive for the overnight? Did you stock up on Ibuprofen? (tee hee)
It is rather amazing what we put ourselves through this time of year so that we can "enjoy" a Thanksgiving meal with family and friends! Whether your family is a wonderful concoction of love and peacefulness or maybe they're like the Pecan Pie you've made for dessert - full of nuts, we hope you take some time to relax and laugh. Some of my best holiday memories include moments of laughing at myself. Lumpy gravy. My turn at making the Mandarin Orange dessert - which turned into Mandarin Orange soup. The boil in the bag mashed potatoes to which my nephew Kristofer said "I thank God for a microwave Thanksgiving!"
And yet we do it all with flare. And style - always with style! What's your style on Thanksgiving? Want to know my Thanksgiving style secret? Pants a size larger (or elastic waist). I know, I know - fashion faux pas - but comfy and realistic? YES! Oversized top, expandable belt and I'm in!
